This was the date Dean had put the most effort into. When Lainey walked into her pod she'd find on the couch a very soft throw blanket with pineapples and surf boards printed on it as well as a stuffed plush 'Dug' toy from 'Up'. In the pod there was also an overly large bouquet of sunflowers as well as lunch set up with some a slice of pizza, a hamburger, and a salad and an empty champagne glass with a bottle of sparkling cider. Dean entered his own pod eagerly and once he was sure she was inside too he spoke. "Good afternoon, Beautiful." He said to her. "So here's the deal, you said you'd eat anything put in front of you but that didn't give me much to go on, so I gave you plenty of options in case you got hungry, that's cider since I know you don't really drink, and I thought you might be missing your pup so I thought I'd try to help with that." He said with a clear smile in his voice. Lainey Yurkovich

Lainey wasn't much of a date prepper as she didn't know how best to show that she liked someone. But an attempt was made! For this date, she'd asked production to set up a meat tray, because. Ya know fitness trainers and their protein. She'd also requested a six-pack of beer, some water, and a yoga mat. She had asked production to push the couches back enough to provide room, and asked them to light some candles that smelled of the beach and if it was possible to have a noise machine play wave sounds.
She practically skipped down the hallway before opening the pod door, and when she did there was an audible gasp. "Dean..." She said breathlessly, walking in slowly and closing the door. She turned and saw the stuffed "Dug" and a squeak would be heard. She brought her hands up to cover her mouth and she felt tears begin to sting at her eyes. "Deaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan." She whined before she laughed. "Your making me cry! This is so sweet!" She told him. "It's so thoughtful, and just- Your amazing Dean Baelish." She told him. "I'm really happy to see you again..." She said shyly.

There was the sound of gentle delighted chuckled at her response. "No, you're amazing! I'm so glad you like it, Lainey." He told her. "And look at this place! It smells amazing in here, if I close my eyes I might be able to imagine I'm at the beach." He said as there was the soft sound of the yoga mat shifting as he sat down and a can of beer being opened. "Just missing some sun and you at my side." He said flirtatiously.
There was a little pause and he cleared his throat after a moment. "Alright, honest moment, heart on my sleeve. I had no idea what to expect coming onto this show. But when they asked us to make our list of our top...whatever number they said of people we wanted to see again... well I had the hardest time. And not because I couldn't narrow it down, but because I could barely get past number one. I didn't expect to find someone so awesome so quickly, but I'm really glad I met you and I'm really excited for today to get to know you better."
Then he found himself over correcting a bit. "Not that I want to pressure you all!" He explained quickly. "You're awesome and I can only image that other guys have made a connection with you too! I just...wanted you to know how I was feeling..." He cleared his throat a little awkwardly.

Lainey walked over and grabbed the pineapple blanket, wrapping herself in it and then grabbed Dug before coming over and sitting on her own Yoga mat. She hugged the stuff toy, feeling heat coming off her cheeks as she listened to Dean. "You'll have to help apply sunscreen or else I'll turn into a lobster." She said flirting back.
"Hoooo boy." She breathed out. "I wish you could hear how fast my heart is beating right now." She laughed a bit nervously. "I feel the same Dean. I felt it too, the...connection." She admitted. "I wasn't expecting to find anyone if I'm being honest, and to have a connection with you so fast? Mind-blowing. I was too afraid to gush about you to the other girls in fear someone liked you as much as I do..." She told him. Her voice trailing off. "I was also really afraid you wouldn't feel the same and that I'd be left with nothing because well....I only really wanted to see you." She buried her face in Dug and took a deep breath. It was a lot to take in, but knowing they felt the same? "I'm stupid grinning right now." She laughed.
"Also, good call on the sunflowers. They're actually my favorite flower." She confessed. "I am impressed." She laughed. "Alright Mr. Killer Abs, what should we talk about today?" She asked curiously.

Dean laughed, a sound that was almost relief. "Me too." He said with a chuckle when she said she was grinning. "I'm not sure I'll be able to stop." He added.
"Are they really?! Well that was lucky." He said about the sunflowers. He breathed a sigh of relaxation and relief, and the sound of the waves stopped as he turned off the machine. "All the better to hear you with, my dear." he said with a little laugh as he settled back down on the yoga mat.
"Well Killer Thighs, let's see now." he teased playfully. "Let's see, what's probably important that we should get out there? Um, how old are you? Do you live alone or with other people? Are you religious? That seems like a good place to start." he asked her. "For me, I'm the ripe old age of 27, I live alone, and I believe in God but am unattached from any one religion at the moment."

Lainey giggled as Dean turned the noise machine off. "Those are all good things to know." She laughed. "Well, I'm 25. The only one I live with is Dug." She said. She let a big sigh of relief out. "Well we also believe the same when it comes to religion! Despite the fact my dad was Jewish, and my mom was an Irish-Catholic we weren't all that religious growing up. But my dad did try and make sure we celebrated Hanukkah, and at least understood where he came from." She explained.
"Okay, here's another important question. Do you want to have kids? And how many? Being that I come from a large family I know how chaotic it can be so I'm perfectly fine with two." She told him. "But I know I at least want one, and I'm in no hurry." She said. "What about you? Do you want kids?"

Dean sighed contentedly. "I must be dreaming. There is no way you exist, it's too good to be true." He said flirtatiously and with a little laugh.
"Oh, that is a good question. I would like kids though to be honest I haven't put a lot of thought into it, it kind of just felt like a given you know? I guess I just always knew somehow I would someday have kids. I'm not in a hurry either, nor have I put all that much thought into how many. I figured that would be a discussion me and my wife would have together. I feel like...at least two would be nice, I think it's healthy to have siblings and being an only child could be lonely." He explained.
"Does your family live here in San Diego? I don't think I asked that. Do you have long term plans to say here or would their needs to be a chat about location eventually?" He asked.

Lainey laughed. "I keep pinching myself." She told him. "You are too good to be true." She sighed wistfully before she giggled again.
"That makes total sense, I feel the same. I also know how important it is to have a sibling and somebody you can rely on. Like, my brother is my best friend, and I'm super close with my sisters and I don't know what I would do without them. I want my kids to have a similar relationship if that makes sense." She said.
"We lived just outside of San Diego because it was cheaper at the time, but after my dad died we all kind of migrated into San Deigo. My sister Johanna and my mom still live outside of it, but Abby, Lyle and I live here. As for long term plans? San Diego is home, but if we ever needed to leave for work or whatever, I'm a freelancer mostly, so as long as I have my computer I can work pretty much anywhere. I've always wanted to get out and do some exploring since we couldn't really growing up, so if relocating ever was an option I wouldn't mind it so long as Dug can come." She said. "All my family is here, and I'd miss them, but we gotta live our lives too ya know?" She smiled.
"What about you? Long term plans to stay here? Are your family in San Diego?" She asked. "You said it's just your dad and your two brothers right? What are they like?"

“Alright, alright, alright. Good to know. Good to know. Ya, no current plans to leave San Diego at the moment. My whole family is here as well. If there was an opportunity that came up that took us somewhere else then I’d definitely be open to the idea. I figure once I’m married then the most important part of my family will be my wife. She’d take priority and we’d do what was best for us as a couple and our own family.” He explained.
“Yep, just us four. We’re all pretty physical and outdoorsy sort of guys, some more than others. My dad, George, is just as much into reading as he is into sports but he has a daring streak that can surprise us. My older brother John had been married for a few years now to Mary. Me and Mary...don’t really get along. But I put up with her because I’m close with John.” He said with a little guilty chuckle. “My little brother Mike is definitely is the craziest one is the bunch. Tell me more about your family.”

"I like your plan there Dean, it's definitely a partnership." She told him.
"They all sound wonderful and like my kind of dudes. Except for uh Mary." She laughed. "How come you two don't get along if you don't mind me asking?" She asked curiously.
She took a deep breath. "Hoo boy, okay so my fam. It's just my Mom Camille, my older sisters Johanna and Abigail, but we call them Jo and Abby. Jo is married to Trent, and they just had my first nephew six months ago. Neal is a very chonky baby." She laughed. "Jo works in communications, Abby has a boyfriend named Jordan. We keep waiting for him to propose, and then there's my little brother Lyle who's only a year younger than I am, and he's a police officer. He's my best friend, and don't let his macho man looks deceive you, he's actually a giant ass nerd in all things." She laughed.
"We lived outside of San Diego, and then after dad died we moved into the city because there was better opportunities." She explained. "Mom and I butt heads a lot, but especially over my dad, so I try to avoid all topics of him when I'm around her. He uh...wasn't my favorite person." She said.

"Mary is...I don't know. I think she's really controlling over John but of course John doesn't see that. She can get all uppity when we want to have 'guys nights' and they often up happening at their place because of that. She can be a bit of a stick in the mud and she think I'm not serious enough and that I'm going to ruin John or something." He explained.
"I bet that's fun to have so many people." he said with a little laugh about baby Neal. "Sounds like a pretty tight knit family and I love that your brother is your best friend, that's really sweet. Is he pretty protective over you then? Am I gonna have to butt heads with him over you?" he asked with a little teasing chuckle.
"Can I ask how your dad died?"

"Oh she's gonna hate me." Lainey snorted at hearing about Mary. "Well for the record, you can have guys night whenever you want, and wherever you want." She told him.
"Yeah, we're pretty tight. If you ask him yes. But we're all overprotective of each other. You mess with one Yurkovitch, you get the whole horde." She laughed. "Honestly if you just treat me right I don't think Lyle would have a problem. He's pretty easy going." She explained.
She took a deep breath and hugged Dug closer, wrapping her blanket tighter around her. "If you ask my mom, it was an accident. In truth? He drank himself to death." She sighed out. "Dad was at the bar, had a bit too much, passed out in a corner and choked on his own vomit. He didn't come home that night, and they didn't find him until too late." Lainey said. Her voice showing a bit of the resentment she had towards her father. "He uh...got a gambling and alcohol addiction. That hover damn trip was the last time I actually liked my dad and everything was okay. After that the gambling and drinking got worse, and became more obvious. He was the main provider because mom was a stay at home mom, he spent all our money though at the bar and slots. Jo and Abby had to get jobs as soon as they were of age to pay for bills. Mom turned a blind eye to it all, and it was hard..." Her throat constricted, and she swallowed the lump that had formed. "I uh, don't really talk about him. I have a lot of anger towards him. This is going to sound really bad, but when we found out he died, I felt relief." She said softly.

There was a bit of a pause as Dean took it all in, listening to her story. "I'm sorry, Lainey. That really sucks. That must have been really hard for you and your siblings. I'm glad you had each other and that you weren't going through it alone. It makes even more sense why you are all so close." He said to her.
"I'm here for you, okay?" He told her. "If you ever want to talk about it then I'll be there to listen and if you decide you never want to bring it up again then I won't push it. I am glad that there was an end to the situation and that it didn't get even worse than it already was."

"We supported each other. I honestly don't think we could have survived what we did without each other." She confessed softly. She felt the sting of tears and she let a sigh out. "Thanks Dean. I really appreciate that. I really do. I've just kind of accepted what happened and moved on from that. But mom brings up on occasion, and I just get so angry." She breathed out. "I don't think she can ever accept what he did to us." She admitted. "Our last screaming match about it was years ago. And I've learned to just not bring dad up around mom! At least when I'm around." She made a nervous laugh.
"If you feel up to it, Can I ask about your mom?" She asked softly. "If you don't want to talk about her I totally get it. But she has a pretty awesome son, and I'd like to know about her." Lainey told him.

"Oh ya, for sure you can ask about her. Her name was Gwen. She absolutely loved bluebirds. I remember having a conversation with her once where she said that if she could be anything else in the world it would be a bluebird. Now I think of her whenever I see one. She loved to sing and hum while she cooked and cleaned and while I remember getting annoyed by it at the time, I wish I could have appreciated it more. The cancer was in her brain and took her quickly, she didn't suffer long at all before passing. It's something I think about pretty regularly and I hope that I can really savor the time I have with the people I love, because who knows how long they'll be on this earth."

Lainey listened patiently while Dean talked about his mom, and she felt a tear slide down her cheek that quickly tried to wipe way. She scooted closer, putting her back against the wall of the glass. "I'm so sorry Dean. That must have been really rough." Her voice cracked, and she tried to clear it. "I'm glad she didn't suffer long though." She told him.
"So, while we're on the topic of savoring time with the people we love..." She said slowly. A faint smile crossed her face, and she leaned her head back on the glass with a thunk. "So, my first two boyfriends were jerks right? Andrew was the controlling abusive one, and Brian isn't even worth mentioning. I was really fucked up after Andy, went to therapy to try and feel like a person again, and then I met Jude." Her voice cracked saying his name. "And I thought he was going to be the one, because he helped piece me back together and made me feel like I could be loved and was worth loving." She someone managed to get out through her tears. Using the edges of the blanket to wipe her cheeks. "I never talk about him either. But uh...Jude died. Two years ago in a car accident driving home from work." She choked out. She pressed her face into her knees and let her shoulders shake with her sobs for a moment. She wiped her cheeks on her knees then. "So I totally get not knowing how long someone is going to be here for." She sighed out. "I'm gross and crying like a baby. But you needed to know that." She half laughed. "It's been two years, and I'm ready to move on." She confessed.

Dean automatically moved towards the wall as he heard her beside it. He sat facing it, his hand on the glass while she told her story. "I wish I could hold you right now." He told her while she sobbed, his voice tight, both hands now on the glass. "It's killing me that I can't." He said.
"Thank you for telling me your story." He added softly. "I'm not that great with words, I usually show someone my feelings in other ways, ways I can't in these damn pods." He said with a soft laugh and paused for a moment.
"Lainey? Can I ask you something?"

"It's okay." She laugh-cried. "I'd probably get snot all over you, but I really appreciate it." She told him. "I'm pretty bad with telling people my feelings too, I'm more of a take action girl." She confessed. She got nervous all of a sudden when he asked if her he could ask her something. She had thrown a lot at him at once..."Sure! Ask anything." She said a bit nervously. "Fyi, my heart is pounding in my ears right now." She said with a soft laugh.

Dean laughed softly in an empathetic way. "Well...I know this is only our second date, but I honestly have zero interest in anyone else. Would you...would you be willing to 'go steady with me' or whatever that means in the context of this whole thing. I just...I want to focus on only you, and maybe I'm being selfish by not wanting to share you, but I don't really care." He said with a breathy laugh.
