Penn touched his glass to hers with a smile and took a sip before he too started to dive into the meal. He hated that she had been treated so poorly in her past, but he offered her a gentle smile. "You deserve it, River. You really do." He said lovingly.
He chuckled at her question. "I think she did mention the Princess Bride now that you mention it." He said with a little laugh. "No, my dad inherited my grandfather's farm when we were kids so I basically grew up on a farm." he explained. "Have I not mentioned that before? All those dates early on, some of the information gets a bit jumbled." he said apologetically.

"Mm, that might take a bit more convincing before it really sinks in. But between you and Melissa, I think I'll get there." She gasped. "Oh gosh. She's going to have a fit when she hears I really showed up for this and I'm married...do you think my therapist can sue me if I give her a heart attack?"
"Farmboy, fetch me that pitcher." River quoted with a grin. "It's nothing to worry about, everything has gone so fast that it's easy for the details to slip through. Honestly, growing up on a farm sounds kind of amazing, especially since you have siblings, too, but I guess it's probably a lot of work! What kind of farm is it? Like, animals? Or did you guys have like, big crops or something?"[b/] She was about to take a bite of the chicken, but paused with it halfway to her mouth. "Wait, if he got it from his dad, does that mean you'll get it someday? Or is one of your siblings really committed to it?"

Penn was about to ask who Melissa was until she followed up with the question about her therapist. Ah, Melissa must be the name of her therapist. "Did you tell her you were at least thinking of coming here or will she be totally surprised?" He asked. "I mean, I can go with you when we get back if you want to prove to her I'm not some crazy psycho or something." He said with a little chuckle.
"I'll fetch anything for you, Buttercup." He said with a playful little wink.
"A little bit of both, animals and crops. That's where the goose chasing thing happened. We've got a few horses, chickens, geese, pigs, and a couple of cows. As far as crops, it's mostly corn. My dad has part of the corn crop sectioned off and does a corn maze every fall for the town." He explained. "As far as who gets it...it's still undecided at the moment. None of us are super invested right now, but my older brother still lives close to home and he'll probably end up with it."

"I told her I'd like, applied, but I also told her I didn't think they'd pick me, and that I was absolutely terrified. And then when they did pick me, I had to cancel a couple sessions, so I'm sure she knows I was planning on it...but I don't think she really expected me to go through with it." She explained with a laugh. "She might be impressed that I finally made it out of my comfort zone."
The wink definitely made her head a little fuzzy for a second and she just wanted to squeal, but she covered it by taking a hurried gulp of her water, although she winced when she could feel the fizz in her nose because she'd drank too fast.
"Wow! Well, if I get to see it, I'll bring an umbrella to fight off any geese that get anywhere near you. Or maybe I'll just borrow your lightsaber," she grinned, imagining fighting off a goose with a light-up toy sword. "Are all your siblings into tech stuff, then, instead of the farm? Or is that mostly your thing?"

"If you want me to even go near the birds you'll have to bring something." He joked. "Otherwise I'll just keep my distance. All I really know is that it won't be me who ends up with the farm. Not unless the birds go." He said with a little laugh.
"The tech stuff is mostly my thing. My older brother, Ben, is a lawyer and definitely has the ego for it. We butt heads sometimes but it's been better since we stopped living under the same roof. He's the one with my nieces, Kyla and Leah. His wife's name is Katie. My little sister, Amy, is a videographer. Her husband's name is Ray. They are the ones with the baby on the way."
He took bites of food between their conversation.

River laughed with him about the birds, but she stared intently at him as he told her about his siblings, trying desperately to remember. Once he was done, she closed her eyes and repeated back. "Ben is older, married to Katie, two daughters Kyla and Leah. Little sister Amy, married to Ray, having a baby, and she does videos. Right? And is she having a girl? I feel like you said that before...maybe." She opened her eyes to squint at him as she tried to remember. "Which one taught you to make the flowers? Leah or Kyla?"
She grimaced. "Sorry, didn't mean to make it a pop quiz. I just want to make sure I remember everything. Family is important..."

Penn beamed at her, she had a good memory. "Don't be sorry at all. It's great. And yes, all correct. Except that Amy and Ray don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet...or haven't chosen to find out...or something. I can't remember exactly. It was Kyla who taught me to make the flowers. She's nine and Leah is six. If I had my phone I'd show you pics, but alas...that shall have to wait." He said with a smile.
"What is your Dad's name? I don't think you ever told me."

"Oh! His name is Dave. And he'll make you call him that, too. Only students call him Mr. Hughes." She laughed and shook her head. "He's an English teacher, I think I told you, and the students love him. it's cute to see."
"Honestly, you might get along with Dad even better than you do with me! He's super into Star Wars and like reads the extra novels and stuff. He likes some video games too, um... final fantasy, I think?" She pursed her lips.
"Yeah. Final Fantasy. And he wanted me to play one too but I told him I'm no good at them and I wouldn't be able to get past the tutorial."

Penn set down his fork as he finished eating. His plate wasn't empty but he had had enough. He leaned back a little in his chair, listening to River with a smile. "He sounds really cool, I'm looking forward to meeting him. Is there anything I should know before I meet him? Any big red flags to avoid so he'll like me?" He asked.
Beyond River saying yes to marrying him, he knew the next more important thing was to get her father's blessing. It was likely even more important than with another girl considering that not only was River his only child but his only family.

River set down her fork as well and held her glass of water with both hands as she leaned back in her chair to consider her answer. She stared into the glass of water, watching the fizz, and felt her eyes go out of focus a little as she thought carefully. She couldn't think of anything off the top of her head, but she startled and lifted her head to look at Penn once she had figured it out.
"I was going to say there's nothing, but it's not really that there's nothing that would bother him--I just don't think it's anything you'd do," She gave him a rueful smile that only lifted one corner of her mouth. "You'd never hurt me or hurt a child, you'd never encourage ignorance or racism, you have interests that are not just sports--not that there's anything wrong with sports, but it drives Dad crazy if that's someone's only personality--It's all things that just....aren't you. I think as long as you're as kind and funny with him as you are with me and the others, you'll be just fine."

Penn smiled softly and nodded. "I think I can manage that." He said with a small chuckle and a thoughtful nod. "I just really want him to like me."
A new song started to play and Penn smiled, pushing back his chair and standing. He offered his hand to River. "My Queen, may I have this dance?" He asked her with a flourishing bow.

River smiled, this time more genuinely--she wasn't thinking of past mistakes this time. "I don't think that's going to be a problem, really. He's a super sweet guy, and he'll just be happy to see us happy."
River set down her glass in a hurry, blushing when it clanged loudly against her dishes, but she was just in a hurry to get it out of the way. Luckily, nothing broke, and she managed to take his hand and rise to her feet. "It would be my pleasure," she answered, biting her lip in an unsuccessful attempt to restrain her smile. She wanted to look graceful and regal, like a queen, but she couldn't keep herself from just overflowing with happiness.

Penn's gaze fell to her lips as she bit it and he beamed down at her. Taking her hand he pulled her a little from the table so they had plenty of room and his free arm moved around her back. He began to sway gently with her to the slow beat of the music. He was no professional by any means but he could manage.
If she let him he'd let go of her back to spin her once softly before bringing her back to him.

River followed his lead, happy to follow a simpler dance. She'd been a little worried she would step on his feet and had watched them carefully at first, but she soon fell into the rhythm and relaxed. She laughed softly as he spun her outwards and her hair and dress twirled with her.
When he pulled her back in, she let herself land a little closer to him than before; although she returned her hand to his shoulder, she rested her cheek just below it. She let her eyes fall half-closed as a gentle smile played on her lips.

She looked so beautiful. She always looked beautiful but there was a certain radiance about her tonight that he found enchantingly captivating. He felt like they were falling into a rhythm with one another as they were becoming more and comfortable together. In this moment he wasn't think about anything or anyone else, only her.
As they swayed his thumb stroked her hand and he pulled her a little closer against him, leaning down to rest his head gently on top of hers.

As the song came to an end, River sighed gently, peacefully and let herself drift to a stop. She turned to look up at him, releasing his hand and sliding her opposite hand up so that her forearms crossed behind his head as she pulled him down for a gentle kiss, just barely brushing her lips against his at first. In the background a new song began, but she was hardly aware of anything else.

Penn melted into that soft kiss, cherishing her as he returned it lovingly. His now free hand moved to her side against her ribs and the hand on her back moved from her shoulder to the small of her back and back up to her neck where his fingers entangled with her hair and he kissed her more deeply. The beauty of the song somehow filled the spaces in the room and made the moment all the more intimate.

River gasped slightly against his lips as his fingers tangled in her hair. Wrapped up in him, she could smell the cologne, although it wasn't too strong; she decided she definitely liked it. She'd have to remember to tell him...but not right now.
River hummed softly into the kiss as she pushed herself up on her tiptoes to get closer to him. A brief flicker of memory from their first kiss in the maze flitted through her mind, but she didn't hold onto it long--this time, she wasn't letting go.

The hand on her ribs moved to wrap around her waist and his fingers in her hair pulled her closer as he started to lose himself in her kiss. Just like the night of the maze he held her snugly and securely and very very gently lifted her up. Her toes just barely leaving the floor. He was experimenting.

River hesitated for half a second, although not for the reasons Penn might have expected--she was just debating whether her impulse was a little too racy or not. She decided she didn't care. She let him lift her; in fact, with just a little hop to aid the process, she tightened her arms around his neck and pulled her feet up off the floor to wrap her legs around him so that he was holding her completely.
"Hi," she murmured with a breathless laugh, breaking the kiss only to kiss his jaw and then his neck instead. "This ok?"
