Once they had landed everyone had separated pretty quickly. It seemed everyone was eager for some one-on-one time and Penn didn't disagree. As he stepped into the resort, carrying both his and River Hughes's bags, he let out a low whistle. He was sure he had never seen anything so lavish in his life. "Wow, can you believe this place?" He asked River with a smile.
They were soon checked in and someone had come out to take their bags to their room, leaving them free to look around if they wanted. Once his hands were free he immediately reached for River and moved to take her hand if she let him, bringing it up to place a kiss on her knuckles. "I'm the luckiest man in the world and it has nothing to do with this place. I'm just so happy to be here with you." He told her.

River had tears in her eyes as she looked around the resort, just from how insanely beautiful it was. She'd never even been out of the state, and here she was in another country with her fiance she'd only met a few days ago. She felt as if she'd somehow left her normal, lonely life behind when she arrived for the experiment, and she was on her way to something completely different. It was terrify and exhilarating all at once.
She was lucky she had Penn there to keep her on track, or she would have stood outside just staring at the ocean for hours, contemplating it all.
"Honestly I can hardly believe it's real. It's like something out of a fairy tale," she answered in a slightly dazed voice. His kiss against her knuckles brought her a little closer to reality, and she smiled at him and squeezed his hand lightly. "I'm sorry I'm a little distracted...I think I'm feeling... overwhelmed? But in a good way, I think."
Her free hand strayed towards her necklace but she caught herself and dropped it back to her side, a frown crossing her face for a moment. She hesitated for only a second longer before she stepped in to hug him, trying to ground herself a little. She breathed deeply there, taking comfort in the fact that he was definitely real and steady.

"Don't be sorry." He told her warmly. "I think anyone who wasn't at least a little overwhelmed by this whole thing would need to seriously have their brain examined."
He wrapped his arms around her as she hugged him and he kissed the top of her head, swaying her gently. "I'm here. I've got you." He told her softly as his hands moved up and down her back.
"What would you like to do, my Love? Do you want to explore a bit, check out our room, take a nap. Tell me what you need, darling." He asked her.

"Everything. I want to do everything." River laughed with just a hint of hysteria. "Is this what they mean when they say 'like a kid in a candy store'? I want to see everything and do everything, but if I try to do too much I'll just make myself sick." She groaned and buried her face in his chest for a moment, not caring that it was going to mess up her glasses. Once she'd pulled herself together, she pulled back enough to look up at his face.
"What sounds good to you? I slept for a while on the plane, so I don't think I need to nap right away, but if you do then I can always keep reading the book you gave me."

Penn chuckled softly at her response. "We'll definitely do everything. We'll be sure to pace ourselves though." He said with a grin. His hand moved over her hair as she buried her face into his chest.
"Ya, that book gets pretty intense. I don't think that will help with your overwhelm at all." he told her. "I slept on the plane too." He scrunched up his face in thought. "Let's....go to the room and get settled a bit while we decide?"

River nodded once, firmly. "Perfect. I think they said it was this way..." She stepped back from the hug but took his hand to head off towards the room. She muttered the room numbers to herself as she moved down the hall, looking for theirs. "Oh, it's this one. Do you have the key?"

Penn grinned and took her hand as they started to figure out where to go. He wasn't paying any attention to the room numbers, he was just smiling softly as he looked down at her and the cute way she was reading the numbers. How was even possible for everything she did to be so cute, even little things like this?
"Hmmm?" He asked, having not been paying enough attention to fully hear the question. He registered the words and nodded. "Oh, right. Ya." He pulled out the key card and unlocked the door, opening it for River and stepping out of the way so she could go in first. "Welcome to paradise, River Hughes."

River gasped when she walked into the room, immediately heading for the glass door at the back that led to a small private pool so she could look out at the view. She turned back to Penn with a look of radiant awe. This was better than Christmas as a kid, like that times ten, and she was getting to share it with him. It was perfect. She was practically bouncing up and down with excitement.
"This is amazing!" she exclaimed, clasping her hands in front of her. "I don't even like swimming that much, but I think we have to, at some point. It's too gorgeous. I bought a new swimsuit, before coming. Actually, I bought a lot of things for the experiment that I had wanted to get for a long time..." She blushed, remembering some of the things that were in her suitcase.

Penn entered the room behind her and looked around with raised brows. This place was unreal! Production must have spent a fortune to get them all rooms here. The pool was gorgeous, the view was breathtaking, and the woman standing by the glass door was radiant.
Her words definitely peaked his interest. "I'm excited to see your swimsuit." He said with a smile. "What else did you bring?" He asked curiously, stepping up beside her.

River turned bright red, now, unsure how to go about explaining. She swung her gaze to the ceiling and immediately reached up to play with her necklace as she tried to form a sentence. A nervous giggle bubbled from her before she could manage words.
"Welllll... I got that swimsuit, a nice nightgown instead of just old t-shirts, a new suitcase, some cute lingerie that I wouldn't mind being seen in, and I um...I started the pill." She winced, just hearing herself say that out loud. It was like she was saying all she had thought about was sex, but that really wasn't it at all--she'd just wanted to be prepared and to feel as nice about herself as possible. Treating herself well was the first step, right? She bit her lip and glanced up at him, feeling the blush heating all the way across her collarbone and shoulders. Of course, he was going to find out about all this eventually, especially since most of it she'd gotten in preparation for having a fiance around, but she couldn't help being a little embarrassed.
"I probably should have had some of that stuff before, but it didn't really seem important before there was actually going to be someone around to notice that I wasn't really getting myself anything nice...and um, obviously marriage involves, um, activities, that I wanted to be prepared for..."

Penn smiled softly and took another step closer to her. His hand moved to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear before gliding down her neck and his fingers traced over the chain of her necklace down to where the pendant hung near her sternum.
"That word still sounds so surreal. 'Marriage'. We're going to get married, we aren't just dating. You're my fiancee and our wedding is coming up. This is so real and intense and it honestly just blows my mind in all the best ways." He whispered his thoughts to her.
"I love that you were so prepared, it doesn't surprise me at all that you thought through every step. It reminds me how much you must have thought through us before you agreed to say yes when I asked to marry you." He placed his forehead against hers tenderly, his other hand ran up and down her arm from shoulder to elbow and back again.
Now that they were here alone in this room, talking about lingerie and birth control, he could feel his desire for her growing again.
"I want to take you on a proper date." he told her, moving back a little and smiling down at her. "I want to share a meal with you at the very least. Would you go on a date with me, River? We could even order food to the room if you don't want to go out."

River's cheeks were still burning as he stepped closer, but the way he traced her necklace sent a little chill running across her shoulders. She felt as if her heart were on a tightrope as he leaned his forehead against hers--equal parts comfortable love and wild intensity. The strength of what she felt honestly blew her away, just like he was saying. She felt a little like she was splitting in two, trying to decide if she wanted to be sweet and gentle, or if she just wanted to drag her suitcase into the bathroom and try on some of the things she'd bought right this minute. Somehow all this time since the maze felt like the anticipation was starting to get to her, and she was going to lose her mind. She wondered if once that was past, she'd be able to calm down a little, but something told her the way she felt about Penn wasn't going anywhere.
"You're not wrong. I definitely spent a lot of time trying to figure out where my head and my heart were at. But it always came back to you," she confessed.
A proper date? She lit up like a Christmas tree, nodding rapidly. "Of course I would! That sounds absolutely lovely. I'm happy here or out there somewhere...but I should probably change if we're going somewhere." She paused, her eyes flickering to the side, and she put a hand to her mouth as she laughed. "Actually. I think I'll change no matter what..."

Penn felt almost giddy with excitement. He swooped in for a quick peck on her lips before he stepped back, his mind clearly reeling with a variety of ideas. "Okay! Okay, let's see. Okay." He said as he started to pace back and forth in thought. After a minute he stopped in front of her, both of his hands palm out as he started to talk with his hands.
"Okay, this is what we'll do." He started excitedly. "I'll order some food and we'll get something set up in here, but we'll get all freshened up and change into something nice as if we're going out." He said. After all, he had literally proposed in a comic-con costume and she still hadn't seen what he looked like when he put in real effort to look nice. "Yes?" He asked to make sure he approved before he started to put his plan into action.

River's hands crept to her mouth to contain a delighted giggle as she watched Penn considering his plan. She wasn't sure exactly what he was thinking but was absolutely precious to watch. When he turned back to her and started to explain she just watched him with a dopey look of pure adoration. The plan was good, of course, but he was better. Unable to contain herself she grabbed his shoulders to pull him down for another quick kiss.
"Absolutely," she agreed, kissed him one more time, then hurried to grab her suitcase, her hair whirling behind her in the speed of movement. "Do you mind if I take the bathroom?" she asked, glancing back at him over her shoulder as she picked up the case. If he didn't argue, she'd roll her suitcase in there with her and shut the door, although she popped her head back out after to say, "Just let me know if you need to trade! But I'll make you do it with your eyes closed."

Her kiss made him stop in his tracks and he hummed happily into it, his hand finding the small of her back. But too soon she was gone again and he grinned as she agreed. "It's all yours, my Lady." He said with a dramatic gesture of his hand towards the bathroom door. "But don't come out until I tell you!" he ordered playfully.
As soon as she was in the bathroom he started to put his plan into motion. First things first was to make a call to plan for the meal. With that taken care of he moved to his own suitcase and started to unpack a little into the drawers before getting dressed.
He put on a navy colored suit with a matching tie and a soft pinkish-purple shirt underneath. He fixed his hair a bit, though his hair style was always on the casual side. He sprayed on some cologne, Acqua Di Gio. It was bright and citrus-y with a wood base. He usually smelled mostly of clean laundry, but he did like to switch things up for special occasions and tonight was definitely special. He also made sure to brush his teeth, cause airplane breath equals gross.
Soon the food had arrived and when Penn gave River permission to come out she'd find a small table set up in the room with candles and white flowers and a meal of some sort of roasted chicken with a fresh salad that was light and fruity with a tangy vinaigrette. He had ordered some sparking waters in a few different flavors as well and they sat in fancy bottles, ready to pour.
As she stepped out he pressed play on a remote and soft romantic music started to play in the background of the room. "My lady," He said with a little bow and held out his arm for her to take. "Your meal awaits." He didn't care that it was a lunch date instead of dinner, he simply wanted to date his fiancee.

River didn't change much of her makeup--she never liked wearing a lot, so she just freshened it a little, and wet down her hair to bring back some of its curl after the craziness of the airport and all that. She brushed her teeth, put on fresh perfume (her book scented one, as always) and deodorant, and glared at her reflection for a minute or two, meditating on the fact that she really was beautiful, although she didn't always feel it. Penn helped with that, too. The way he looked at her...it knocked that worry right out of her brain. Satisfied that the basics were taken care of, she took off her glasses and put in her contacts again, and swapped to one of her newer bra/panty sets, although that wouldn't be visible under her dress--it still helped her feel pretty, whether Penn ended up seeing them or not. She'd accidentally left the dress itself out of the list of things she'd bought for the experiment, but she really did love it. She was glad she'd saved it for a special occasion. When she was finally allowed to leave, she did one last check in the mirror, gave herself permission to do a little twirl of excitement, then went back out into the bedroom. Once she spotted what he'd set up, she stopped in the doorway for a moment, just taking it all in. She was so lucky. The luckiest. Were the others this giddy? She hoped they all were. She gave her best attempt at a curtsy before taking his arm and beaming at him. He looked just as good as the room, she noted, and she thought she noticed something that smelled like citrus, but she wasn't sure if it was him. She decided that trying to figure that out by leaning into him would be a little too distracting at the moment. That could come later. "It's gorgeous, Penn," she gushed, "I don't know how you did all that so fast!"

Penn couldn't help but look her up and down when she came out and he let out a low whistle. "You look incredible." He told her. That dress was stunning on her and looked so soft that he couldn't help but reach out to touch her sleeve to feel the fabric.
As they reached the table he moved to pull back her chair for her with a smile. "Well the hotel staff was very accommodating." He explained. All he had done was made a quick call, it was nothing really, all the credit when to the hotel staff.
Once she was seated he moved to the other side of the table and sat down. "What would you like to drink? Looks like we have still water and a variety of sparkling water flavors; original, pear, coconut, and lime."

River blushed and automatically looked at the floor, flustered by the compliment and the whistle. "You look really nice too," she told him, nudging him with her shoulder.
She was practically glowing when he pulled out her chair for her. She'd never had a date this nice, and while she felt a teeny bit guilty, it was nice to be spoiled a little. She wished she could stop comparing Penn to her ex, but she was constantly being surprised by these little thoughtful gestures that she never would have expected. It was only natural that she be startled by how different it was from her past, right?
She felt a little touch of relief when she heard the hotel staff had helped--it made her feel a little less like Penn was working too hard. She wanted to do something nice for him, next. She'd have to think of something good. His question about the water distracted her, though, as she put her napkin on her lap.
"Hmm, I think pear sounds nice. Really, they all do, but I actually love pears. She tilted her head and frowned. "Which one would you pick? Do you have a favorite fruit?"

"Do you? That's good to know. I agree. I think pear sounds nice." He said as he poured them both the sparkling pear water. "Peach is my go-to flavor for things like this, but when it comes to actual fruit, I love mangoes and apples." he said with a smile.
He raised his glass then towards her and made a toast. "To a lifetime of dates, in and out of our home, and making a million wonderful memories together."

Mmm, good choices! I think peaches and pears are probably my favorites." She agreed.
She raised her glass as well, adding "And to the many new adventures we'll be facing as a team," before taking a sip. The water was crisp and cold, and she smiled brightly as she set her glass down.
She took her fork and poked at her salad, carefully putting together a bite with a little bit of everything. She used the opportunity to look at the salad instead of him as she spoke thoughtfully. "It's funny, I feel a little like we've known each other forever, but I still keep learning new things about you--and you keep surprising me with how sweet you are. I never thought that I'd have to get used to being treated well," she laughed a little. "On the other hand, I hope I never take it for granted. I'm just really grateful."
She popped the salad into her mouth and glanced up at him, trying not to make a huge deal out of it, even though she really meant it. "Mm," she started, remembering something, and covered her mouth as she swallowed so she could talk. I mean to ask before, but I got um...a teeny bit distracted. Do you know why Lainey called you Farm Boy? It made me think of the Princess Bride, but I didn't think that was what it was about..."
