You arrived yesterday and met all of your suite mates. Today is your first day of dates! This morning your phones were all taken from you and will be returned either when you go home or at the start of stage 3! No social media, no contact with the outside world, just a chance for you to focus on your connections with other people here. (You were told this would be the case when you first signed up to be a participant)
The first round of dates will be relatively quick. You'll get a chance to meet all the ladies/gents. The first dates will last about 10-20 minutes (IC) and the purpose is a short little getting to know you.
Here are some topics you might consider talking about (though it's TOTALLY up to you): General lifestyle (partier/works a lot/spends most time at home alone) Occupation Hopes for this event/what you're looking for in a spouse Hobbies/Passions
RULES - Remember to keep physical descriptions out of your conversations. - Each person gets only 10 posts in this thread! - Posts are limited to 150 words! The idea is to give your characters a little taste but leave them wanting MORE!
Will you start to make a connection today? Let's find out!
This date is for River Hughes & Percy West!
You enter the pods, one person on each side in a soundproofed room. This allows you to feel totally secluded and private from the other participants who may be near you. This is your chance to get a feel for the women/men who are here and who you might be interested in continuing to get to know!

River decided to speak up first this time. "Hi, I'm River. Is anyone there...?" she asked. Once the other person answered, she'd add, "This is all a little hectic! But everyone seems nice. Do you have a favorite book, Percy?"

"Hi River," Percy's voice was always on the softer side, a nice tenor. "I'm Percy. Yeah it's kinda overwhelming. I'm an introvert so I can't remember the last time I met so many people at once, kinda overwhelming but it's fun!"
"Hmmm I'd have to say my favorite book is the Harry Potter series, I know it's for kids but I always loved them. I used to tell my parents I want to be a wizard when I grow up. What's yours?"

River's soft alto voice was much more enthusiastic when she answered back, "Nah, definitely not just for kids! The students at the college where I work have a quidditch team and they have a Yule Ball at Christmas time, too. I'm definitely a Hufflepuff, by the way. I was a teeny bit sad I didn't get Ravenclaw." She laughed a little. "But, if I had to choose a favorite book, I'd say Song of Achilles! I usually say The Odyssey, but I just read Song of Achilles, and it's actually the story of Achilles from before Troy, all the way up to when he dies. It's sad, but very well done."

"Ok that's like totally amazing," Percy blurted out. "I've always wanted to go to a Yule ball! Now I feel like I missed out on the whole college experience thing! I'm a Ravenclaw by the way, but my sister swears I'm actually a Hufflepuff, but nah I'm a Ravenclaw."
"I don't know a whole lot about mythology, but I like when I get to hear about the stories. They did a lot of crazy things for love in those stories," Percy said wistfully. "So are you a professor or something?"

Mm-mm. I'm a librarian, actually. So I can absolutely recommend some good books about mythology if you're interested. I work at a local college's library, so I get to spend a lot of time helping the students with their projects, but I also get to go to some of the events on campus, which is nice. Sometimes they bring in authors and comedians and things." She answered cheerfully. "What about you? What kind of work do you do, Percy?"

"Oh that's really cool! I love libraries, I can't really explain it, I think it's the smell of books that's just really pleasant," Percy said, "Now imagine you smell like books too." It was silly but Percy sometimes said silly things when he was nervous. "Oh I play violin and I'm songwriter too, but not like the type that makes music you would've heard of. I record music for other artists."

"I know you were kidding but I totally do smell like books most of the time. They make a perfume that smells like that, and my mom got it for me for my birthday. She meant it as a joke, too, but ah, it's just so nice!" She talked a little faster here while she was excited about it. "And the violin is such a lovely instrument. I always wanted to play but we couldn't afford lessons when I was little. Do you write classical music? Or for pop artists?"

"No way, that's really awesome. Are you wearing it right now? Not that I could like smell you or anything," Percy said with a laugh. "I'm wearing sandalwood scented aftershave I think," he added. "Violin came easy because I already played guitar, strings kinda have the same concept if you start to understand the physics of it. I'll have to play something for you sometime, I brought my violin to the experiment actually. Sometimes I do stuff for pop artists and sometimes I might be doing strings for a movie soundtrack or something. Another violinist might call me a heathen, but I like seeing how strings adapt to pop music."

"Mhm, I am! I always put it on when I'm getting dressed, just out of habit. Although if you could smell it right now, I'd definitely be wearing waaaay too much." She giggled.
"Oh, I'd love to hear you play--um, if we meet up again, I mean... River cut herself off with the correction. "I think that you ought to be able to do whatever makes you happiest. Music is so subjective, and so filled with emotion. It's very personal, I think." She paused, sounding a little unsure of herself. "Can I ask what makes the violin your favorite? Like...you said you play guitar as well, so why did you choose the violin instead?"

"I can't smell you from here so no worries," Percy said, "Ok so hear me out on this. I can play a bunch of stuff, guitar and piano, with enough practice most people can be at least entertaining at parties. But with violin, you have to actually be good or it sounds like screaming cats, and also I can pretty much play the whole family of strings because I have my basics down. I think to become good at violin, you have to really love it and respect all the different sounds it can make. Also, easier to travel with," Percy added a laugh to the last part. "There's just so much to violin that people don't realize is there."

River sighed softly. "It sounds silly, but it's nice to hear you talk about something so passionately! I just love when people get all excited about things. I could listen to it forever. But, um! I think I see what you mean about the violin. So it sounds like it's partly the complexity of it, and the skill it takes, right? That makes sense to me. It's the same reason that people push themselves to break world records or go to the olympics, sort of, that desire to put your full heart and passion into things. It's fascinating."
"You said you mainly record for other things, but do you play just for yourself, too? Just for the love of it?"

"I like to think that everything I do is for me, like even if I'm contributing to to someone else's record, it's still me being a person who's adding something beautiful," Percy said thoughtfully, "I'm not a big fan of the spotlight, I think I was overloaded with it as a kid or something so studio time is my time no matter what the purpose. Do you ever feel that way with books and stuff?"

"Mm. Yes, actually, I think I understand. That's often how I felt, stealing a moment of peace with a book. It's nice to lose yourself sometimes, you know? And I certainly understand not wanting the spotlight." She laughed a little. "I think the way you're dedicated to your music is really admirable. Not everyone has something they're that passionate about, I think."
"What do you like to do when you're not making music? Or, are you mostly making music, just different kinds?"

"Well, I used to not really have a life outside of music and I'm learning how to have one lately. I like dancing, but typically only in my kitchen like when I'm waiting for my tea to brew or the middle of the night when I can't sleep and want to tire myself out," Percy said, "I read a bit, still setting up my reading nook but my little sister got me some plants for the house so I'm getting to know how to take care of them. I had to put a cage on one to keep the cats out of it."
"What do you do when you're not doing... book stuff? And the other question is, would you want to dance with me in my kitchen in the middle of the night with some cats watching?"

"Yes please, kitchen dancing is the best kind of dancing. Bonus points for a wooden spoon microphone to sing along." River giggled. "Catch me in the kitchen after work making spaghetti and singing with Judah and the Lion."
"Ok let me answer that and then I've got about a million for you now! So, I like to watch murder mysteries, my favorite right now is Father Brown. I also like yoga--not a class, just a girl on youtube named Adrian. But honestly, I read. Like...a lot. But it's just because there's not much else to do alone in my apartment so...yeah.
But, I do have a cat named Hades myself! Tell me about your cats, and what is your favorite kind of tea?"

"Now that sounds like exactly what I want to do when I get home, assuming I leave the house in the first place. Now I can do many things, but I can't sing and dance at the same time, just can't do it," Percy said with a laugh. He took a deep breath, "Ok, so I... actually I have seven cats. Eloise, Tripod, Misa, Captain, Muffins, Cedric, and Rowena. Yeah, that's all of them. About half of them are what people consider broken but they're pretty much my kids. I think, cats make the best book buddies, at least when they're not trying to chew on the book you're reading. They also really love bookshelves, so I have a lot of those, even if most don't actually have books on them. I guess you can say being a single cat dad counts as a hobby?"

"Whoa! I think you live with the cats, they don't live with you. she teased.
"That's actually super sweet. I got Hades from the shelter when he was three; he was pretty scrawny back then and scared of me. He's really opened up since then! I feel like I can guess from Tripod's name what's going on with them, but now I'm really curious to hear about the others! They sound like a handful." She laughed. Luckily Hades likes to chew on shoelaces and sweatshirt strings, not my books. But he has definitely pushed all the books off my nightstand to get my attention before."
"I know we don't have a whole lot of time, so maybe tell me one good cat story? Or tell me if you adopted any of them in groups? And then we can call a raincheck on the rest if you're interested in chatting again...?"

"You're not wrong. Rowena and Cedric were actually my grandfather's cats. When he passed, he left me the house and the cats, so now I live there, sometimes my sister lives there too, but really the cats rule the place. It's a lot of litter boxes. The weirdest one is Muffins, she's a munchkin that was rescued from a kitten mill and she's all sorts of inbred and not very bright, and she's allergic to cats but I love her anyways." Percy said, sounding every bit the proud father that he is. "I definitely want to hear more about you and more about Hades!"

"Aww that's so cute and terrible! I can't imagine being a cat that is also allergic to cats...in a house full of other cats! That must be a lot of allergy medication." She laughed. "I just want to hug all the cats now...the more I think about it the more I miss Hades back at home--and it's only been a few days. But, I'm definitely looking forward to talking with you more! I want to hear all about the other cats and their quirks too. But I also want to make sure we don't only talk cats...I happened to like learning about you too, after all."
